Igniting Connections: Celebrating our Fire Family across Generations, Cultures, and Disciplines
The urgent need to address wildfire-related challenges across the world requires us to develop and share solutions to promote fire-resilient human and ecological communities in an era of rapid change. In commemoration of our 10th International Fire Ecology and Management Congress, we return to its origins in California to celebrate our diverse and growing fire family. The 2023 Fire Congress will bring together people across generations, cultures, and disciplines to exchange knowledge and discuss strategies. Participants will be encouraged to share and explore proactive solutions that apply science to meet desired management and societal outcomes.
We invite proposals on all topics related to fire ecology, science, and management. In particular, we are interested in proposals for sessions and presentations that focus on the following subthemes:
- Connecting Science and Management
- Fostering Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
- Indigenous Fire and Cultural Ways of Knowing
- Interdisciplinary Fire Science
- Intergenerational Fire Learning
- Partnerships and Collaborations
- Workforce Development Solutions
- Youth Education and Engagement
We are focused on the following key considerations while planning for the 2023 Fire Congress:
- Seeking sponsorship and grant funds to support attendance by often underrepresented groups
- Broadening participation and facilitating collaborations, with a focus on increasing attendance from land managers, Indigenous fire practitioners and leaders, and youth involved in learning about wildland fire
- Encouraging attendees to bring their families and offering family-based activities
- Providing options for pre-recorded virtual presentations and live Q&A to accomodate those who cannot travel
- Creating opportunities for onsite and virtual participants to interact with one another via online discussion and 1-to-1 meetings
- Livestreaming the plenary presentations for virtual attendees and recording plenaries for all participants to access after the event
We understand that not everyone can travel to Monterey for the Fire Congress and we will provide the following options for virtual participation:
- Livestreamed and recorded plenary sessions for virtual attendees
- Pre-recorded virtual oral presentations that are viewable on-demand after the conference begins, with a live Q&A session hosted on Zoom for sets of 3-5 virtual presenters
- Some in-person presentations will also be available for viewing on-demand
- Conference app and website to enhance interaction and networking for all attendees
Abstract Submission Fee for Oral Presentations and Poster Presentations
A processing fee is required for each abstract submitted. This fee is separate from registration and required for all oral and poster presentation abstracts.
The abstract fee is non-refundable and covers escalating administrative and online costs associated with abstract submission and review, finalizing the program, and sharing your abstract/presentation on our mobile app and conference website. Our hope is that this will also incentivize attendance, reducing logistical challenges associated with late cancellations.
To ensure this fee is not a barrier to participation, presenters can self-select the appropriate fee on their submission form based on this sliding scale:
- Regular submission fee: $50
- Discounted submission fee: $25 (available for students and those who need financial assistance)
- Fee waiver: $0 (for people who cannot afford the fee)
After submitting your abstract, you will receive a link to pay the fee using our online payment system. If you need to pay this fee with your registration, please email [email protected] so we can invoice you.
Updated June 14, 2023. Please note we do not expect to extend due dates; submissions made after the posted deadlines will be considered if space is available in the schedule. Thank you!
