Call for Abstracts/Proposals
Objectives
The 5th International Fire Ecology and Management will provide a forum on global wildland fire research, education, and management. The Fire Congress theme is “Uniting Research, Education, and Management.”
Featured invited speakers will put contemporary wildland fire issues into a global context. Concurrent sessions and an evening poster session will cover a wide range of topics and issues. Conference participants can help shape the Fire Congress program by proposing oral and poster presentations, workshops, and special sessions developed on specific themes. Participants also can nominate lifetime and student achievement awards and propose organizational meetings.
A new feature is free meeting space for participants to conduct their annual meetings on Monday and Friday. Special demonstrations and workshops will occur on Monday to provide hands-on experiences for participants.
Topics
The program sessions will include presentations on topics related, but not limited, to the following broad themes:
- Observing fire – fire effects, history, meteorology, and behavior
- Simulating fire – modeling the natural world
- Learning about fire – integrating science and management
- Living with fire – human, cultural, health, and policy perspectives
- After the fire – rehabilitation, restoration, and resiliency
- Future fire — tomorrow’s trends, opportunities, and challenges
An Invitation to Hold Attached Meetings

Congress: “an assembly of representatives for the discussion, arrangement, or promotion of some matter of common interest…”
In the spirit of bringing people and organizations together in a congress to discuss and promote fire ecology and management, the Association for Fire Ecology (AFE) would like to invite any interested agencies and organizations to hold their own meetings in conjunction with the 5th International Congress. In a time of dramatically reduced or restricted budgets, AFE recognizes that it is difficult for those of us in the fire ecology and management field to justify travel to multiple conferences and meetings and we think that doubling up on travel is a fiscally responsible way to attend professional meetings.
Rooms ranging in capacity from 10 to 200 will be available at no extra cost on Monday December 3 (during workshops) and Friday December 7 (afternoon following the closing plenaries), or in the evening Monday or Wednesday (the Poster Session/reception will be Tuesday and the AFE banquet Thursday). Hotel meeting rooms may also be available during the Congress.
If you are interested in holding an attached meeting in conjunction with the 5th International Fire Ecology and Management Congress, please use the form above. For more information contact Geoff Babb at gbabb@blm.gov or 541.383.5521, by June 15, 2012.
Call for Special Sessions
Open now until June 1, 2012
>> Submit a Special Sessions Proposal
Special sessions consist of oral presentations designed to address a specific topic by a group of speakers invited by the session organizer. Special session themes can include any subject related to wildland fire research, education, policy, or management. A special session allows coordinated presentations by a group of scientists, educators and/or managers. Special sessions must follow the overall conference schedule and adhere to the scheduled breaks and plenary session schedules.
Sessions are usually a half-day or full-day in length and the program committee will work with your group to accommodate your time needs. Multiple day sessions may also be accommodated. Time for discussion and interaction can also be built into special sessions. If you wish a special session to be recorded, the program committee can work with your group.
The submitter(s) should have sufficient background to design the program, recruit high quality presenters, and moderate the session.
Proposals may be submitted online. Proposals must include (1) An abstract of the session, (2) A list of topics and/or presentation titles, and (3) Candidate speakers.
The Congress will consider special sessions for a wide variety of fire science, education, and management topics including social science and policy, lessons learned from past fires, student presentations or advances in learning, and technology transfer. Opportunities to highlight research, education, and management in the Pacific Northwest or around the globe are welcomed. Sessions focused on research and management programs are appropriate.
We welcome all ideas for special sessions and the program committee will select proposals which will contribute to the richness of the program and be of interest to the audience. For more information about holding a Special Session please contact Robin Wills by email Robin_Wills@nps.gov by June 1, 2012. Use the form above to submit a proposal.
