The Association for Fire Ecology has one of the most active student groups around! Student Association for Fire Ecology (SAFE) has chapters at many universities across the country, and also has national leadership that holds meetings for all chapters to participate.
SAFE is prominently represented at AFE events, and members have the opportunity to volunteer, attend local, regional, or national SAFE meetings, attend special SAFE socials, participate in poster and oral presentations, receive our annual Student Excellence award, meet the top scientist in the field of Fire Ecology, make contacts with potential employers, and more.
Student Activities: 2017 AFE Fire Congress
SAFE is planning a great set of events for the 7th International Fire Ecology and Management Fire Congress. Undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to attend the event and participate in an evening student social at Disney Wilderness Preserve, the national SAFE lunch meeting, and a student-focused interactive fire circle discussion. Several conference presentations will share student research findings, and we’ll be holding a student poster contest. In addition, students can volunteer at the conference for discounted registration rates.
Here is a snapshot of the activities being planned for the 2017 Fire Congress:
- Tuesday, November 28: National SAFE Meeting 11:50-1:20pm
- Wednesday, November 29: SAFE Social at Disney Wilderness Preserve. Transportation and food will be provided.
- Thursday, November 30: SAFE Fire Circle conference session “Student Focused Career and Panel Discussion”
- Post Conference (December 3-4): Disney Wilderness Preserve Prescribed Burn (SAFE members only, click here for information and application, due September 1)
